GIZ - Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit

As part of the EXPORTI 2024 program, we supported 30 Tunisian companies in the date and date-derivatives sector through a targeted export capacity-building initiative. The project focused on company selection, in-depth training on European regulations, and practical export compliance exercises. The approach was highly operational, with direct applicability for international markets.

The Problem

Tunisian companies in the date sector had strong export ambitions but lacked concrete knowledge of European regulatory requirements, proper export compliance tools, and practical procedures adapted to their product categories.

The Solution

The Challenge

  • Varying levels of export readiness among participating date-sector companies.

  • Frequent confusion between rules for fresh produce and processed goods.

  • Limited awareness of tools for identifying specific market requirements.

  • Difficulty understanding microbiological standards, labeling rules, additive restrictions, and hygiene compliance specific to dates and derivatives.

We Made

  • Co-authored the program concept notes alongside GIZ.

  • Defined eligibility criteria and selected 30 companies in the date and date-derivatives sector (fresh dates, powders, syrups, pastes...).

  • Delivered 2 intensive training sessions (12 hours total):

    • European food export regulations.

    • Market access tools (MADB, MACMAP).

    • Tailored regulatory exercises based on real company cases.

  • Conducted 17 hands-on exercises, including:

    • Is date powder considered a novel food in the EU?

    • What labeling elements are mandatory for online sales?

    • How to identify pesticide residue limits and banned additives for dates?
